Kavango council chair condemns protest against councillor

Africa-Press – Namibia. Kavango East Regional Council chairperson Damian Maghambayi has condemned plans by Mashare community members to stage a demonstration against their constituency councillor, Phillip Mavara, whom they accuse of incompetence.

Mashare community members are planning to have a demonstration against Swapo member Mavara on Wednesday.

They are claiming he is not bringing development to the community and is selling land without the community’s consent.

Maghambayi said at a press conference at the Kavango East Regional Council chambers on Tuesday that he has received a letter from aggrieved community members in which they have indicated that they also plan to demonstrate against alleged unfair labour practices at the Mashare blueberry farming project.

He advised against the action and said there were procedures that could be followed to solve the matter amicably.

“I urge the community of Mashare not to take the law into their own hands but to holistically address their concerns with my office,” he said.

Community members have also threatened to close down the constituency office and force the removal of Mavara from his position.
