Africa-Press – Namibia. The //Kharas education directorate is constructing 18 classrooms for learners at the newly established Chief Hendrick Tseib Primary School in Keetmanshoop to address learner placement challenges in the region.

Speaking to New Era, Kalahari circuit inspector Ryan Assegaai said six of the classrooms are already completed, hosting a total of 212 pre-primary to grade 3 learners currently.

“Eight more are nearing completion, and grade 4-7 learners can be accommodated in it by the start of the second school semester, whilst the rest, together with ablution facilities and an administrative block, will also be completed this year,’’ he said.

The educator also said the project relieved the burden of non-placement for learners, with only a few more still needed to be accommodated.

“Allow me also at this juncture to announce that there are still plenty of spaces in community hostels for rural learners at Blouwes Primary School and S.C. Vries Primary School (Snyfontein), but the challenge here is that the medium of instruction is only in Khoekhoegowab,” said Assegaai.

When probed on learners being turned away from schools for not having stationery or parents not being able to contribute towards the school’s development fund, he was adamant that it is not the case in his circuit.

“We have released funds for stationery to schools, and it will be unfair to demand contributions from some unemployed parents,” he emphasised.

Assegaai also said measures like more class visits and monitoring of teaching activities, as well as the primary stakeholders (parents, management and teachers) working together to improve on last year’s average academic performance, will be implemented during this academic year.

More than 10 500 learners were placed thus far at schools in the Kalahari education circuit.
