Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Kunene Regional Council has made a U-turn on its decision two weeks ago to withhold its employees’ salaries.

The regional council employees have now been paid their December salaries. Three council employees, including a regional councillor, confirmed that their salaries were paid on Thursday.

Chairperson of Kunene regional council Hendrick Gaobaeb told The Namibian two weeks ago that council had decided to withhold staff salaries because the line ministry had barred chief regional officer George Kamseb from issuing salaries over alleged recruitment irregularities.

The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has since denied Gaobaeb’s claims. Namibia Public Worker’s Union (Napwu) general secretary Petrus Nevonga this week brought a court application requesting the court to, among others, nullify the council’s decision. The Namibian could not establish if the council’s reversal was in response to the court action by Napwu, as Gaobaeb could not be reached for comment.
