Africa-Press – Namibia. A tree-planting ceremony was held at Aimablaagte Primary School in Mariental on Monday in memory of late Founding President Sam Nujoma, with Hardap region governor Riaan McNab distributing 30 seedlings to local schools.
The event was organised by the Office of the Governor and principals from Mariental High School, Empelheim Secondary School, DD Guibeb Primary School, Sonop Primary School, Danie Joubert Combined School and Aimablaagte Primary School.
McNab said the occasion of paying tribute to Nujoma was a reaffirmation of a cause he passionately championed – environmental protection.
“It is especially fitting that we hold this tree-planting ceremony on 12 May, the birthday of His Excellency Dr Sam Nujoma. By planting trees on this important day, we honour his memory and his lifelong commitment to the prosperity and sustainability of our nation,” he noted.
The governor said environmental protection is vital for the country’s well-being, as Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, making its land sustainable and managing natural resources are critical.
He added that environmental protection is enshrined in the country’s Constitution, and the government had implemented innovative community-based approaches to conserve biodiversity and combat land degradation. These efforts ensure that the country’s natural resources continue to support livelihoods and economic growth.
McNab stressed to the pupils that they were the custodians of this legacy, and that learning about the environment was essential because it empowered them to understand the importance of trees, forests and ecosystems.
“By planting and protecting trees, you contribute directly to the health of the planet and the prosperity of the communities,” he told the pupils.
