Africa-Press – Namibia. Sadrag Panduleni Shihomeka, the country’s Media Ombudsman, yesterday underscored the importance of integrity, fairness, truth and accuracy, saying those principles are the foundation and lifeline of ethical journalism.

Engaging New Era staff during yesterday’s brief courtesy visit, Shihomeka praised the publication’s continued efforts in disseminating factual, fair and accurate information to the public, saying New Era’s impressive track record with the Media Ombudsman’s office speaks for itself.

“That is what ethical journalism is all about. We must always strive to be credible, fair, truthful and accurate in our work, and New Era has been doing that very well over the years. I’m here to motivate you and reaffirm my full support and to say continue doing the great work. Your record with our office has over the years been great and that should be maintained,” said Shihomeka.

Shihomeka, who was appointed as new Media Ombudsman in July this year until July 2028, is currently a senior Journalism, Media Technology and Political Communication Lecturer at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).

The office of the Media Ombudsman plays an important role in adjudicating media complaints outside normal court processes and that, Shihomeka, will continue to be done with the highest standards of fairness and integrity.

“It won’t be my first and last visit to New Era, as we are key partners and our work will need to continue complementing each other in striving for a better and respectable local media landscape.”

Welcoming Shihomeka to the publication’s head office yesterday, New Era CEO Christof Maletsky expressed appreciation to the Media Ombudsman for choosing and prioritising New Era to be amongst many of his first visits since taking office in July.

“You have spoken about our good record with our office and how ethical we strive to be as an institution and as a news outlet; and I can assure that we have worked very hard to put systems and processes in place to ensure that we remain credible, fair and of high standards.

So, I really want to thank you for your support, commitment and willingness to work with us. On our end, we are always ready and willing to do what we need to do to improve, innovate and set new standards.

You can count on our corporation in making your job easy,” said Maletsky.
