Africa-PressNamibia. BOTH the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) and the Namibian Police have confirmed that a military aircraft has just crashed at the Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo Airport at Ondangwa.

The spokespersons of the uniformed services, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo of NamPol and Major Tangeni Shikomba of the NDF, could, however, neither provide details of casualties, if any, nor the cause of the accident.

The taking of pictures was strictly prohibited and the scene of accident was totally out of bounds for journalists. Looking at the wreckage from a distance, however, it appears to be a military jet that possibly overshot the runway.

NamPol’s Inspector Aiyambo said that only the NDF is allowed to release information about the accident. The NDF’s Maj. Shikomba limited himself to confirming that “something” happened at Ondangwa, but he was not yet in possession of details and is, therefore, not in a position to talk about the matter.

The NDF is currently assembling manpower and firepower in the North in preparation for a joint arms exercise – Army, Navy and Air Force – that is scheduled to take place at Uulunga gwaKolondo later this month and which is expected to be graced with the presence of the President Hage Geingob, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
