Africa-PressNamibia. A MOBILE phone dropped on the scene of a cash-in-transit robbery in Walvis Bay might hold the key to the eventual arrest of five armed robbers who managed to steal close to a million Namibian dollars.

According to the incident report provided by the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, the gang attacked a cash-in-transit crew that was busy picking up money from the premises of Pupkwitz Megabuild in Walvis Bay at about 09:00 on Saturday morning.

The report states that five men, two of who were armed with pistols, attacked the Southern Cross Security guards and held them at gunpoint. The gang took all the cash boxes and two service firearms from the security guards.

They also took one mobile phone from one of the security guards. According to the report, the gang took seven of the boxes containing N$943 616 in cash that was supposed to be deposited at the local commercial banks.

They also took the cash-in-transit vehicle’s keys from one of the guards. The armed robbers fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo with tinted windows and a fake registration number.

When members of the Namibian Police arrived at the scene, they recovered N$28 616 in cash that was left behind by the robbers inside the cash-in-transit vehicle.

One of the robbers dropped a mobile phone on the scene. The phone will enable detectives to trace and arrest the owner and possibly the rest of the robbery gang. However, the police still need the public’s assistance to trace the suspects.

In this regard, requested any person that knows the whereabouts of the suspects or that can shed more light on the robbery itself to contact Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu at 081 246 4757, Detective Chief Inspector Johannes Mwatongwe at 081 246 1121, Detective Inspector Johan Geiseb at 081 262 9842, or to provides such information at the nearest Police Station.

The cash-in-transit robbery in Walvis Bay follows a few days after undercover officers from the Namibian police were involved in a shootout with an armed robbery gang in Windhoek.

During the shooting incident, one of the robbers was critically wounded. Four others members of the gang managed to evade arrest by escaping down a dry riverbed.
