Africa-Press – Namibia. Deputy minister of mines and energy Kornelia Shilunga says the Ministry of Mines and Energy has set a target to electrify all Namibian schools by 2025.
Deputy minister of mines and energy Kornelia Shilunga says the Ministry of Mines and Energy has set a target to electrify all Namibian schools by 2025.
Shilunga was speaking at Omauni village in the Okongo constituency last week, during the official inauguration of the electrification of Shatipamba Combined School.
Shilunga said the electrification of schools is an enormous undertaking because Namibia is large and sparsely populated.
“Connecting all schools to the national electricity grid is often not technically or economically viable,” Shilunga said.
Thus, the ministry has designed off-grid solar systems to provide solutions for remote schools through access to renewable energy such as solar power which is abundant in Namibia, Shilunga said.
The ministry has provided electricity to schools and clinics using the solar system approach in the Kunene, Omusati, Kavango West and Otjozondjupa regions, she said.
“These systems provide lights and other electricity services just as good as grid electricity,” Shilunga said.
