Minister Urges Nored to Fast-Track Kavango West Towers

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, has called on the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) to expedite the process of connecting three network towers in the Kavango West Region to the power grid.

“Under the Universal Service Fund, which is financially supported by the Government, the Kavango West Region has been prioritised and, under Phase One of this project, three towers have been constructed. Two are at Kundumbu and Owiwi in the Mpungu Constituency, and one is at Naimanya in the Tondoro Constituency. These three towers have been completed and are awaiting connection to the power grid by NORED. Therefore, we urge NORED to expedite this process,” Theofelus said.

The minister made the appeal during a high-level ICT Stakeholders’ Engagement held in Nkurenkuru, where she highlighted that Kavango West remains one of the least connected regions in the country. She noted that limited connectivity has significantly hindered development in the region, negatively affecting sectors such as education, emergency response, and overall service delivery.

According to the minister, once NORED connects the network towers in the Mpungu and Tondoro constituencies, they will provide much-needed connectivity in the Kavango West Region, not only for community members but also for nearby schools and health facilities, which will receive free Wi-Fi for seven years to enable e-education and e-health services.

“Additionally, under Phase Two of this project, three sites have been earmarked for this region: one in the Musese Constituency and two in Mpungu. The Ministry is committed to working with the regional leadership to identify more unconnected communities for the betterment of this region and Namibia at large,” she added.
