MMA hits Namibia with a bang

Africa-Press – Namibia. MIXED Martial Arts fighting hit Namibia with a bang on Saturday when a highly successful first international tournament was staged at the SKW Hall in front of about 200 ecstatic fans.

With fighters coming from neighbouring SADC countries like South Africa, Angola and Zambia, the hosts were tested to the limit, but Namibian fighters were not out of their depth and enthralled the crowd with some great performances.

In fact, two of the three Namibian fighters on the night won their fights, with the third one unlucky to lose on a split points decision.

Namibia’s Veja Hinda was the star of the show as he beat Ndombe Poe of Angola in the evening’s main fight with a triangle choke hold after only one minute 57 seconds of the first round.

Poe came out with some kicks to Hinda’s legs and body in the opening stages and soon took Hinda down to the canvas, but the Namibian displayed great strength to lock Poe’s head between his legs, and the Angolan soon surrendered.

It was a great victory for the 25-year-old that had his fans wild with delight and took his record to four wins and one loss.

In the main supporting bout Namibia’s Geraldo Bok also gave an explosive performance as he beat Nathan Chilenga of Zambia with a rear neck choke after only 1:34 of the first round, to register his second successive MMA win.

Namibia’s Damian Muller, who was making his debut as an MMA fighter gave a brave performance against Chomba Mwandile of Zambia before losing the fight on a split decision over three rounds.

The 24-year-old Muller came out attacking from the start, landing some spectacular flying kicks, but he was also on the receiving end of two low blows by Mwandile and had to take time out to recover.

The Zambian managed to avoid a penalty and after holding the upper hand with some canvas clinches went on to win the fight on a split decision. It was a fine debut by Muller, though, who showed a lot of courage and entertained the crowd with his all-out action style.

Another Namibian, Arno Jacobs, made a great MMA debut, as he beat Jonathan Banda of Zambia with a first round knockout.

The 22-year-old Jacobs soon overpowered Banda on the canvas and with blows raining in to his opponent’s head the referee stepped in to stop the fight after only 1:56 of the first round.

The results of the other fights were as follows:

Alistar Kunene of South Africa beat Dumildo Tchilala of Angola on a technical knockout after 1:45 of the first round.

Joveth Santana of Angola beat Paul Nkolomba of Zambia on a first round TKO.

Adalberto Ntyamba of Angola beat Mwelwa Khata of Zambia with a rear naked choke in the first round.

Hlompho Phomodi of South Africa beat Tarcel Chinbane of Zambia on a second round technical knockout.
