Africa-Press – Namibia. MINISTER of works and transport John Mutorwa on Friday commissioned the second phase of the rehabilitation of Dr Sam Nujoma Drive at Rundu.
The rehabilitation of the 5,2 kilometres portion of the road follows work on a 2,8km stretch from Eugene Kakukuru traffic circle to Maria Mwengere T-junction, which is nearing completion.
Phase two stretches from the traffic circle to the intersection with John Mutorwa Road in Sauyemwa.
The road has been in poor condition for over two years and riddled with potholes.
“We’re gathered here to witness the commissioning of the second phase of the reconstruction of San Nujoma Drive. I’d like to thank the contractors, the Road Fund Administration (RFA), the Roads Authority, the Rundu Town Council and all the workers involved, for the wonderful cooperation that characterised the spirit in which the first phase of this project was executed, in a record time,” said Mutorwa.
He said in the absence of roads, development becomes very slow if not impossible. He urged Rundu local authority councillors to work closely with the residents and provide them with basic services such as water, housing and electricity.
Chico Henan is carrying out the repairs with funding from RFA, while the Roads Authority is supervising.
RFA chief executive officer Ali Ipinge said the institution strives to ensure that national roads are maintained to promote economic development and attract investment into Namibia.
Ipinge said RFA is committed to supporting the residents and road users in Rundu, by particularly focusing on the rehabilitation of Sam Nujoma Drive as it is a key road within the town, connecting the communities and helping road users access the town centre.
