Mutorwa: Roads not places of slaughter

Africa-Press – Namibia. IN light of traffic volumes increasing countrywide and authorities again stepping up response to road safety, the Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, issued a sobering message: “The country is already battling a global pandemic and loss of lives due to Covid-19, thus we should not exacerbate the problem by making our roads a slaughter place.”

The Minister spoke at the Road Safety Activation event held at the roadblock outside Windhoek on the road to Okahandja. “Do not rush to get into 2022 as if the New Year won’t come,” he said, urging road users to adhere to all regulations.

“Please move slowly, respect the regulations of the road and drive safely so we can all get into 2022 alive.”

Traffic volumes are expected to drastically increase from Friday as many people return home from various parts of the country after the holidays to resume work next week, while others will be joining family and friends for New Year’s celebrations.

Especially the B1 from the North and the B2 from the coast are expected to be extremely busy. According to Sergeant Anastasia Frans, Community Affairs Officer of the Erongo police, incoming and outgoing traffic volumes at the coast were already high on Thursday.

“From Saturday and Sunday we expect extremely high traffic volumes on the B2 road, as most people are going back to their destinations after the holidays,” she said.

She advised motorists to not rush, to keep to speed limits, and to be patient on the road. “Do not overtake on blind spots, and operate in the framework of the rules and regulations of the road,” Frans said.

She again urged motorists to put their face masks back on when approaching a roadblock, and always switch on headlights when driving on main roads. “Drive safe and arrive alive.”
