THE Namibian Electronic Sports Association (Nesa) will host national trials this weekend to select a team for the upcoming inaugural Southern Africa Region Esports Championships (Sarec 2022).
The qualifiers to select the Namibian champions for the ‘eFootball’ and ‘Street Fighter 5’ titles will be staged at the MTC Innovation Centre, Maerua Mall in Windhoek, starting at 10h00 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the landmark regional competition is billed for Lilongwe, Malawi, on 3 and 4 December.
Sarec 2022 is a joint project of the Global Esports Federation’s Africa Esports Development Federation and the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5, and it will be a demonstration showpiece alongside of the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games, which will be held in the same city.
“We are privileged to have been invited to the Global Esports Federation’s Sarec 2022,” Nesa said in statement.
The event will also see a Sarec Forum take place in which a convergence of e-sport, sport, tech and business stakeholders will discuss the growth potential of e-sport in the region.
“As such, Nesa, which is the representative and governing body for e-sport in Namibia, is hosting national qualifiers to select Namibian representatives for this monumental event on 8 October,” said Nesa.
“This initiative is the first in Africa that attempts to demonstrate the value of e-sport to the global sport community at such a scale. The event requires representatives from the age of 16 to 19, and we are making efforts to create as broad a reach as possible to participate in this event. Two representatives will be selected for the two gaming titles, Street Fighter V and eFootball 2022 at our qualifiers,” Nesa said.
Participants can register for the event on the Nesa website.
“Nesa invites all Namibian citizens under the age of 20 to participate in the qualifiers and become the Namibian youth representative athlete for the championships.”
The event is powered by Namibian e-sport partner MTC.
