Africa-Press – Namibia. A Namibian cue sport team will compete in the Ultimate African Pool Championship in Mpumalanga, South Africa, this week, where total prize money of half a million Namibia dollar will be on offer.

A 12-member team, representing the Namibian national men’s team, a national development team, and two women’s singles players received their national colours at the Namibia Sports Commission on Friday.

Cyril Moller, the president of the Namibia Cue Sport Federation, said Namibia will be worthy opponents at the continental showpiece.

“We are still quite new in the international arena, but we’ve proven ourselves to be worthy at previous tournaments in Australia, China and Mauritius, and now we are off to South Africa, where we will compete against the best players in Africa,” he said.

“We have a chance to make a difference, I believe we are worthy competitors as a Namibian team, and we will make everybody proud for being part of that event,” Moller said.

He said more than N$500 000 in prize money will be at stake.

“This is a crucial continental games event, where our teams will compete against the best on the continent to showcase their skills on the international stage. The game structure is divided into a team and single event in a round-robin format, while the total prize money amounts to more than N$500 000,” he said.

“This is the first time that the federation will participate in an Ultimate Pool Champion, and this will open the doors for Namibian athletes to get a taste of pool on a more professional level. Ultimate Pool South Africa is a United Kingdom business franchise that offers the opportunity for pool players to play in high-paying environments to earn big money abroad,” Moller said.

He thanked several companies that contributed to their tour, including Bahnhof Service Station, McClune’s Transport, CBS Walvis Bay, Vineta Medical Centre, Rössing Uranium, Dr Kock, Sandwich Harbour 4×4 Tours and The Dome PitStop Sports Lounge.

The Namibia national men’s team consists of Bertram Kloppers (captain), Cyril Moller, Leon Kolz, Lorenz Louw and Pieter Dreyer; the national development team consists of Theunis Folscher (captain), Jadon du Plessis, Leon Beukes, Daniel Clark and Waquar Satar; and the women’s singles players are Celeste Espach and Charmaine Kotze.
