Africa-Press – Namibia. A 30-year-old Namibian man has tested positive for the Omicron Covid-19 variant in Japan.
Omicron, which was first detected by southern African scientists, has been reported in, among others, Germany, China and Israel. Health and social services minister Kalumbi Shangula said today they are aware of a Namibian man who travelled from Japan to Namibia and back to Japan, who had tested positive for Omicron.
“We are collecting information on this case, especially the route of travel and the contacts in Namibia,” he said. The Japan Times reported on Monday that the Asian nation had confirmed its first case of infection by the new Omicron variant.
A man in his 30s was found to be infected with the heavily mutated strain after arriving from Namibia at Narita Airport near Tokyo on Sunday, according to a government source quoted by the newspaper.
