Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA condemns Israel for the killing of innocent civilians and forcible displacements of Palestinians in Gaza and the remainder of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
In a press statement issued by the Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Penda Naanda, it was said that the deliberate infliction on Palestinians in Gaza of conditions of life that can bring about their physical destruction in whole or in part constitutes genocide, the prohibition of which is a peremptory norm under international law.
According to Naanda, Namibia supports all international efforts aimed at advancing the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
“It is against this background and its own history of being subjected to illegal occupation and apartheid that Namibia is, amongst other things, participating in the ongoing advisory proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem,” he said.
He added that in a submission made to the ICJ last year, Namibia warned that “Israel is now attempting to commit, if not actively committing, genocide in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”
Naanda indicated that Namibia, therefore, calls on all states to act in accordance with their erga omnes obligations by taking all reasonable measures to stop the acts of genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinian people.
Further, he said Namibia would welcome the indication of provisional measures by the ICJ for Israel to immediately comply with its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
Hence, Naanda indicated that Namibia supports the timely initiative taken by the Republic of South Africa.
