THE Namibian volleyball league reached an exciting climax on Saturday when Khomas Nampol and Revivals Volley Clubs won the men and women’s titles at the Bank Windhoek NVF Cup finals.
Playing in front of a vibrant and singing crowd at a packed DTS Hall, Khomas Nampol beat the defending champions Namibia Correctional Services 3-1 to win the men’s title.
They got off to a good start, winning the first two sets 25-17, 25-18, and although NCS managed to take the third set 27-16, Nampol sealed their victory after winning the fourth set 29-25.
Khomas Nampol captain Santos Doka said it was a sweet victory after a tough league season that included having to play the quarterfinals in Mariental.
“It wasn’t easy at all, starting from Mariental, where we had to play outdoors, so the weather and the teams were tough, but we managed to make it through and it brought us here for tonight’s final. NCS put up a good fight but we just needed to implement what we worked on during practise with our coaches,” he said.
As the winning team, Khomas Nampol will now represent Namibia at the Zone 6 Championships in Lusaka, Zambia in December and Doka said they were determined to do well.
“We are looking forward to representing Namibia in Lusaka, so the hard work starts with our training now. But we have a young and energetic team, they are very disciplined and follow the rules and whatever the coaches say, and Im just very excited and looking forward to that,” he said.
NCS’ captain Simon Ekandjo said they did their best.
“A lot was expected from us because we are the defending champions, but it was a tough game and we did our best. But we will regroup and hopefully we can win the final and beat them next year,” he said.
The day started off with the semifinals where Nampol beat NDF 3-1 and NCS beat Unam Vipers 3-2. In the third place play-off match, NDF beat Unam Vipers 3-1.
The women’s final saw Revivals retaining their title when they beat Kudos Volleyball Club 3-1.
Kudos won the first set 25-14, but Revivals stepped up the tempo and took charge of the match by winning the next three sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-20.
Beatrix Karongee of Revivals said they were out to take revenge after losing to Kudos earlier in the season.
“Kudos beat us twice in the league, so we were really focussed on beating them in the final. We knew it was going to be tough and we had hectic training sessions, even on Sundays, just to make sure that we make it through to the final. Now we are very happy and excited and we are looking forward to going to the Zone 6 championships in Zambia in December,” she said.
Simonia Kanyamura of Kudos said a loss of concentration led to their downfall.
“The game was really hectic – we started off quite well, but in the second and third sets we unfortunately lost concentration so we had to settle for the silver medal. Moving forward I think we need to work hard as a team and keep on training hard as well,” she said.
In the semifinals Revivals beat Namibia Defence Force 3-1 and Kudos beat Beaufort Volleyball Club 3-0, while Beaufort beat NDF 3-2 in the third-place play-off.
