Africa-Press – Namibia. President Hage Geingob has said Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is the ruling party’s presidential candidate for next year’s national elections.
Geingob said this on Saturday when he opened a Swapo central committee meeting in Windhoek.
This weekend’s central committee meeting is expected to elect the party’s secretariat.
“We have one candidate only and that’s comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,” Geingob said.
He urged his party members to avoid factions and move on from last year’s congress.
“It’s over. We have a candidate elected. When time comes, we will properly campaign for her. So, she is elected on behalf of Swapo,” Geingob said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah was re-elected as Swapo vice president, beating Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and Pohamba Shifeta. She was initially elected in that position in 2017.
The Namibian reported yesterday that Nandi-Ndaitwah had turned down the prime minister position Geingob had offered her, as she prefers that of vice president.
