Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged Namibians to rally behind the Swapo party in the upcoming regional councils and local authorities elections, saying only their vote will allow the government to deliver uninterrupted services and meet national development goals.
The Swapo Central Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body between congresses, convened in Windhoek on Saturday, to deliberate on strategic party matters ahead of the elections.
Namibia will go to the polls on 29 November, to elect regional and local councillors who will take over the administration of regional and local authorities.
According to the Electoral Commission of Namibia, this year’s election is under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Natural Resources Beneficiation for Youth Empowerment and Sustainable Development”.
Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that this theme would guide the party’s vision up to 2030, aligning with the commitments made in the 2024 Swapo Election Manifesto and Namibia’s 6th National Development Plan launched in July 2025.
While delivering her maiden Central Committee address as Swapo president, Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the electorate to back her party, maintaining the ruling party has delivered on its promises and remains the only vehicle to drive Namibia’s development agenda forward.
“I call upon Namibians to entrust us with a decisive mandate in the upcoming elections. Let us secure a commanding majority in all 121 constituencies and 59 local authorities, so that our vision can be realised without obstruction,” she said. She cautioned that where Swapo previously lacked a majority, development has often been hindered.
“Service delivery will be delayed by standoffs, walkouts, unnecessary disputes, and other issues that might undermine our developmental imperatives. This situation must be stopped by the people of Namibia through voting for Swapo party,” she said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah assured citizens the ruling party is committed to improving livelihoods and accelerating development. “A vote for Swapo is a vote for progress, accountability, and prompt service delivery. It is no longer business as usual. Namibians will retain the power to hold us accountable, guided by the national Constitution. We must deliver at all costs.”
The President pointed to the 2025-2030 Swapo Election Manifesto as the party’s binding contract with the people, saying it is central to her administration’s work. “Since we took office in March 2025, I have seen members of the Cabinet and senior executives who are hands-on. I believe we will continue to serve our people without reservation and as a united team.”
Turning to internal party matters, Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that the candidate selection process for the elections is nearing completion. While praising districts that have concluded their work, she raised concerns over petitions and grievances that have emerged.
“Honesty, integrity and loyalty to the party must be the guiding principles that direct our actions. Petitions born out of indiscipline or self-interest weaken the party and erode the trust of the people,” she warned.
Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that the party must safeguard its legacy and present candidates who are competent and dedicated to serving the people.
Solidarity beyond borders
Nandi-Ndaitwah also spoke on international relations, reaffirming Swapo’s historic stance on solidarity and justice. “We fully support multilateralism, and we call on the United Nations and the international community to safeguard international peace and stability,” she said.
She expressed solidarity with Palestine, Western Sahara, and other nations fighting for self-determination, while condemning sanctions on Cuba, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
“According to our Namibian Constitution, international disputes must be solved through peaceful means. We commend the government of Qatar for hosting peace negotiations, bringing together warring parties to resolve their differences through dialogue,” the President said. Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that Swapo’s guiding principles of solidarity, freedom and justice remain unchanged.
“We must safeguard the dignity of our party, protect its legacy, and inspire confidence that Swapo remains the reliable custodian of Namibia’s future,” she said.
