Nandi-Ndaitwah requests urgent passage of Land Bill

Africa-Press – Namibia. IN an effort to escalate housing and land delivery in the country, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has issued a strong call for the swift deliberation and enactment of the crucial Land Bill.

Nandi-Ndaitwah made the call during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) held in Windhoek on Thursday.

According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, it plays a vital role in addressing the nation’s critical land and housing challenges.

Addressing the persistent issue of informal settlements, Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed the importance of a unified national effort.

“We have set for ourselves to address the situation of informal settlements,” she said.

She added that the national alliance between the public and private sectors, and members of society, in the upgrading of informal settlements and the accelerated delivery of low-cost residential housing and sanitation, continues to be critical.

Further, Nandi-Ndaitwah indicated that to combat the housing crisis, they have committed to constructing 10,000 low-cost social housing units annually, targeting a total of 50,000 units within the next five years.

She explained that this ambitious goal will be accompanied by the rapid formalization of existing informal settlements, bringing much-needed stability and security to those communities.

The President also called for innovative solutions to overcome bureaucratic hurdles that have long hampered land and housing development.

She then directed the Minister of Urban and Rural Development to ensure the establishment of a Special Land Delivery Task Force, which will operate within existing legal frameworks to expedite land delivery processes.

Moreover, she added that they also have to restructure the Township Board to improve efficiency, streamline decision-making, and capacitate the Surveyor General’s Office.

“Every Namibian deserves the opportunity to a safe environment to call home,” she concluded.
