Nandi-Ndaitwah Tackles Rising Suicide Rates in Ohangwena

Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has issued a heartfelt appeal to the residents of the Ohangwena Region, urging them to confront the alarming surge in suicide rates that has cast a shadow over their communities.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s remarks came during the official opening of the Eenhana Expo on Monday.

The President’s address was particularly poignant, following the recent deaths by suicide of three educators in the region: Titus Nuuyi from Enyana Combined School, Nestory Namhindo of Eenhana Secondary School, and Lukas Kalwenya of Ohehonge Combined School.

These losses have amplified the urgent need for a collective response to the escalating crisis.

Expressing her concern, Nandi-Ndaitwah revealed that the issue has been “giving me sleepless nights,” acknowledging that this sentiment is undoubtedly shared by many across the region.

She implored citizens to engage in deep introspection.

“We should engage in soul-searching and ask the big question: what is happening in our society?” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised the core tenets of her administration, highlighting the importance of an inclusive government.

“For such a government to function effectively, we need to listen and pay attention to one another,” she added.

In a proactive measure, the President announced that she has already directed all civil servants to be sensitive to the circumstances of others.

This directive aims to cultivate a more empathetic and responsive public service, ensuring that those in positions of authority are equipped to recognise and address the needs of individuals struggling with mental health issues.

This move is a crucial step towards building a support system that can intervene before situations escalate.

She then extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, offering thoughts and prayers to those impacted by these profound tragedies.
