Africa-Press – Namibia. THE National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) and the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) have signed an addendum to their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), expanding their collaboration to include emerging fields such as space science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“The addendum seeks to revitalise the existing MoU while broadening its scope to address contemporary issues in research and innovation within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. The revised MoU now includes collaboration in areas such as data governance, open data access, space science, digital innovation, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things, among others. These additions reflect NCRST and CRAN’s recognition of the interconnected nature of research, science, technology, and innovation in Namibia,” NCRST explained.

Dr Anicia Peters, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NCRST, highlighted the complementary mandates of NCRST and CRAN. She noted that while CRAN regulates Namibia’s ICT sector, NCRST is responsible for promoting, coordinating, and advancing research and innovation. She added that the renewed collaboration will significantly contribute to the development of the country’s ICT ecosystem.

CRAN CEO Emilia Nghikembua echoed these sentiments, stating that the enhanced cooperation will strengthen the impact of both organisations within the sector.

“Both organisations are committed to the immediate implementation of the MoU. The next step will be the establishment of a Joint Technical Committee to oversee its rollout. The MoU is valid for three years and may be renewed thereafter,” NCRST added.
