Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday commissioned 1 779 newly trained cadet constables into the Namibian Police Force at a graduation ceremony held in the Oshana region.

The officers, drawn from the Ruben ‘Danger’ Ashipala, Simon Mutumba Mutumba, and Pius Joseph Kaundu police training centres, completed a rigorous nine-month training programme under the theme ‘Together We Stand: Empowering a Safer Namibia’.

Addressing the graduates, Nandi-Ndaitwah described the police as the “first line of defence between society and criminals,” and urged the new officers to serve with integrity, discipline and patriotism.

“This is not about job creation. Becoming a police officer is a voluntary service to the nation… You are the shield of our democracy, the protectors of law and order,” she said.

She commended 375 graduates who received specialised training in border security, public order management, and VIP protection, calling on them to use their skills responsibly, effectively and efficiently.

The president acknowledged the rising levels of serious crimes, particularly gender-based violence, and called for a united national effort.

“Our nation is disturbed by events such as the killings at Okahandja, where young women and girls were brutally murdered. The police must work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice,” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah also thanked regional police chiefs from Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Eswatini for attending the event, underscoring Namibia’s commitment to regional cooperation on safety and security.

Parents and guardians of the graduates were praised for their sacrifices, with the president saying their support “transformed these young men and women into disciplined, dedicated law enforcement officers.”

The newly commissioned officers will be deployed across the country.
