Ngurare Urges Stronger Japan–Africa Tech Transfer

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Prime Minister, Dr Elijah Ngurare, has highlighted the need for technology transfer between Japan and African countries, emphasising that technology has the potential to transform agriculture and improve food security across Africa.

“We need to embrace sustainable farming practices, invest in research and innovation, and enhance access to technology. Technology transfer between Japan and African countries is therefore critical. Furthermore, introducing smart agricultural projects, promoting agro-processing value chains, and advancing climate-resilient agriculture are vital components. In all these, we need access to new technologies,” he said.

Ngurare made these remarks during a high-level thematic side event held on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan. The event, organised by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), was held under the theme: “Building Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Food Systems and Local Economies in Africa Anchored in Sustainable Blue Economies and Agriculture.”

The Prime Minister noted that while Africa is richly endowed with arable land, food security remains a significant challenge. He attributed this to climate shocks — including prolonged droughts and floods — as well as rising food prices. In light of these challenges, he stressed the urgent need for greater investment in the agricultural sector.

“This calls for increased investment in agricultural projects to enhance food security, accelerate food production, and reduce dependency. We need to embrace sustainable farming practices, invest in research and innovation, and enhance access to technology,” Ngurare said.
