Africa-Press – Namibia. The National Housing Enterprises (NHE) in carrying out its mandate to provide decent and affordable housing to Namibians, had a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of 40 low-cost houses in the southern town yesterday.
In his remarks, Indileni Iipinge, the entity’s acting executive for infrastructure development during the official handing over of the construction at Extension 7 in Tseiblaagte, said the project speaks directly to their vision of providing decent and affordable housing for people. He added that the ceremony marks an important milestone, not only for Keetmanshoop, but Namibia as a whole.
Iipinge said that “Let us remember that housing is not just about bricks and mortar, it is about creating homes, building communities and securing the future of our nation.”
The executive further explained that the initiative is in line with National Development Plan (NDP) 6 targets, which emphasise accelerated housing delivery and infrastructure development as key drivers of socio-economic transformation.
“Our President, Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi- Ndaitwah, has called for a ‘Business Unusual’ approach and that is and that is exactly what we are doing,” he said.
The development consists of 10 one-bedroom houses of 30.1 square meters and 30 two-bedroom houses of 42.7 square meters, at a total construction cost of N$5.8 million. The construction is expected to be completed by 29 May 2026.
“Importantly, no beneficiary will pay more than N$250,000, exclusive of administrative costs for a house on this site, making this project accessible to ultra-low-income earners, the very people who need it most,” he emphasised.
According to information provided, two contractors have been appointed by NHE to expedite the completion of the project and minimise delays as a means to address the housing need in the town and country.
It went on to state that the project will create about 100 jobs, injecting much-needed economic activity into Keetmanshoop.
The last projected completed by the National Housing Enterprise in the town during 2020 delivered 77 houses at a cost of N$26 million. NHE will also build 59 houses in Lüderitz under the Informal Settlement Upgrading Affordable Housing Programme, strengthening their footprint in the //Kharas region.
