Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will depart for New York today to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where she will deliver her maiden address as Head of State.

The Presidency announced yesterday that Nandi-Ndaitwah will lead the Namibian delegation to the High-Level Week, scheduled from 23 to 29 September 2025 under the theme ‘Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights’.

Nandi Ndaitwah’s participation marks the first time Namibia’s new President addresses the world’s largest diplomatic gathering.

The President is expected to speak before the Assembly next Wednesday.

She will join fellow leaders from across the globe to reflect on peace, human rights and sustainable development as the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary.

Nandi-Ndaitwah will also take part in a range of high-level events on issues of direct importance to Namibia and the wider international community.

These include women’s empowerment; sustainable development; climate action; global economic reform; youth, peace and security, as well as nuclear disarmament.

“In addition to these multilateral engagements, President Nandi-Ndaitwah is expected to hold bilateral meetings with fellow Heads of State and government as well as attend cultural and business promotion events to showcase Namibia as a destination for trade, investment and tourism,” the Presidency said.

The President will also attend cultural and business promotion events aimed at presenting Namibia as a destination for trade, investment and tourism.

One of the flagship events is the ‘Experience Namibia in New York’ showcase, hosted by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB).

It will highlight the country’s culture, business opportunities and tourism offerings.

The presidency indicated that Nandi-Ndaitwah will further engage international business leaders in a roundtable organised with the Business Council for International Understanding.

Extending outreach

Beyond the UN, the President will make a working visit to Philadelphia on 25 September.

There, she is expected to meet the business community and academia in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Officials say the visit will help consolidate relations between Namibia and key American institutions, with a focus on investment and educational partnerships.

The Head of State will be accompanied by senior government officials and is scheduled to return to Namibia on 26 September 2025.

Global stage

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly opened on 9 September 2025.

All 193 member states are expected to participate.

The session is presided over by German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, who has called for unity as the world body celebrates eight decades of existence.

The Assembly comes at a time of heightened international tensions, with conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, a worsening global food crisis, and the urgent need for climate action dominating discussions.

Reform proposals under the ‘UN80’ initiative, aimed at making the UN more effective and accountable, are also high on the agenda.

This year’s Assembly is particularly symbolic for Namibia, as it is the first time Nandi-Ndaitwah appears before the UN as President.
