Africa-Press – Namibia. Residents of Katima Mulilo are urged to refrain from flying private drones in the area from today until Wednesday, as preparations for the 35th National Heroes’ Day have reached final stages.

The commemoration, to be hosted in the Zambezi region for the first time, will take place on 26 August at the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex under the theme ‘Built on Bravery, Bound for a Prosperous Future’.

The event will be officiated by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, joined by senior government officials, traditional authorities and delegates.

Speaking yesterday during preparations, Namibian Defence Force (NDF) spokesperson Colonel Petrus Shilumbu stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures, including the temporary drone restriction.

The NDF has been conducting rehearsals since last week, with full parade sequences carried out over the weekend. Today marks the final rehearsal ahead of the national event.

“The rehearsal is important to ensure that the Brigade march in perfect timing, maintain both the formation of the parade and execute movements smoothly. For safety reasons, members of the public are requested not to fly private drones in Katima Mulilo during this period,” Shilumbu said.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, together with the protocol, safety and security sub-committee for national events, also held a briefing at the sport complex on Saturday to sensitise the media and public at large on protocols and safety guidelines.

Celebrated annually on 26 August, the day commemorates the Namibian war of independence, which began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe.
