Africa-Press – Namibia. ANGLERS will not be able to harvest Kabeljou fish between the Paaltjies and Sandwich Harbour areas at Walvis Bay from 1 January to 31 March 2023.
According to Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources spokesperson Uaripi Katjiukua, the restriction is a conservation measure in respect of Kabeljou.
She added that the regulations are enforced to protect the spawning stock of fish that is undertaking its annual migration from the north (Skeleton Coast) to breeding grounds in central Namibia (Sandwich Harbour area).
“As the stock passes through the central area, many anglers target these aggregations hence the need for the restriction,” she said.
Meanwhile, issuing of recreational fishing permits over the festive period will continue until 31 January 2023 at regional offices during normal office hours 08h00 to 17h00 and during weekends and public holidays from 08h00 to 13h00.
No permits will be issued on Christmas day and New Year.
