THE Omaheke Regional Council has set aside almost N$16 million for various capital development projects in the region.
Most of these projects are to be rolled out at settlements across the region, stretching from Corridor 13 and Aminuis in the Aminuis constituency to Tsjaka and Drimiopsis in the Kalahari constituency.
The remote settlement of Eiseb, located some 350km north-east of the region’s main economic hub of Gobabis, is also among the settlements to benefit from the budget allocation.
A media statement by the regional council on Monday said N$15,9 million will be spent on the roll-out of the capital projects.
The projects include the construction of Corridor 13 and Aminuis settlement offices worth N$5 million and N$3 million, respectively.
Corridor 13’s settlement office is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with possible savings to be reallocated to other projects.
The allocation for the Aminuis settlement office will be used for retention payment, also with possible savings to be re-allocated to other projects as the office has already been completed.
All reallocations are subject to the approval of the National Planning Commission, in terms of the State Finance Act.
An amount of N$6 903 000 has been set aside for the construction of service infrastructure at all settlements, which include water reticulation at Aminuis, Corridor 13, Eiseb 10, Tsjaka, and Drimiopsis.
A new borehole will be drilled at Summerdown, while an existing one at Eiseb 10 will be installed, and one at Tsjaka will be cleaned.
Money allocated to Tallismanus will be used to complete the ongoing construction of a dumpsite, while the construction of a water tower and sewerage system at Eiseb 10 will also be completed.
The oxidation pond at Omitara will be upgraded, while the allocation to Buitepos will be used to complete the ongoing construction of 72 toilets and to install prepaid water meters.
“The Road Fund Administration has allocated N$1 036 400 to the regional council, which will be used to maintain roads at Epukiro Post 3. This will address the extensive road erosion at the settlement,” the statement reads.
A further N$1 346 000 has been allocated for the provision of basic sanitation facilities for rural communities in the region.
The regional council is also busy implementing capital projects for the Witvlei Village Council due to the village council’s limited capacity.
An amount of N$946 000 has been allocated for the completion of a sewage treatment plant and a sewerage reticulation system.
In terms of rural development, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development has allocated N$269 230,77 for the implementation of various projects in the region.
The projects will be funded through microfinance, food/cash-for-work and regional specific action plan initiatives, which are aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural communities through income generation and ensuring food security.
