Africa-Press – Namibia. PLANS are underway to have the first tomato processing facility operational in the Omusati Region during the 2023/2024 fiscal year.
In her address to parliament yesterday, the Minister of Trade and Industrialization, Lucia Iipumbu, said that they intend to open the factory in the upcoming 2023/24 fiscal year.
Iipumbu was presenting the case to outline why parliament members ought to consider and approve the N$297 556 000 budgeted amount allocated for both operations and development.
According to the Omusati Regional Governor, Erginus Endjala, the tomato processing plant is very important for the region’s growth agenda.
This, according to Endjala, is due to their desire to expand production and have their own brand of Namibian goods available in their stores.
According to Endjala, based on the financial resources, the factory will either be located in the Epalela or Omahenene areas.
Since the regions farmers don’t have a place to sell their produce, he said, “we want to help them have a market”.
He added that, at the moment, locals are the only ones who can buy the raw food grown in their area.
“Once the factory is operational, the people will have access to job creation,” he added.
He emphasised that the factory will boost production while also employing a sizable number of people.
Endjala claimed that those who are currently working at half capacity will be able to do it on full scale because they might have access to markets for their goods.
