THE Ondangwa Town Council is planning to launch a mayoral fund that will be aimed at assisting its residents who are hard-hit by poverty and the outbreak of COVID-19.
The fund is expected to be financed by stakeholders to keep afloat.
The Chief Executive Officer, Ismael Namgongo said that once the mayoral fund is established it will be able to address some of the challenges faced by the community of Ondangwa.
Namgongo noted that in May, the Ondangwa Town Council passed a resolution to establish the fund.
“Those to get assistance are mostly self-employed people who lost their income as a result of strict measures implemented by the central government to curb the spread of COVID-19 and are currently unable to feed themselves and those that live in extreme poverty,” he added.
Namgongo, who also took note of the Kwathela Oshiwana Foundation’s efforts of extending a helping hand across the country, said that the leadership of the town council will also be able to help where the need exists.
As part of kick-starting the mayoral fund, the council received donations from Mayor Paavo Amwele, Deputy Mayor Ester Auala and other council members.
They also received food donations from the Kwathela Oshiwana Foundation and Ondangwa Farmers Market.
The donation is expected to benefit about 382 residents of the Ondangwa district.
