Africa-PressNamibia. THE Ondangwa Town Council plans to plant trees of different spices around the town as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management.

As a result, the northern town is expected to plant more than 150 plants, as part of its celebration of the Arbor Day that was held at Ondangwa recently. The driving theme for this year is ‘Forest restoration; a path to recovery and wellbeing.’

Oshana governor, Elia Irimari, said the theme speaks to the important role that trees and forests have in the ecosystems and in the promotion of biodiversity.

“The droughts that we have been experiencing and the flash floods that are becoming more destructive in our region, as well as the uncontrolled veld and forest fires in most parts of the country, including our grazing areas at Ombuga, point to the fact that climate change is a reality and the time to act is now,” he said.

Irimari then called on all people to eventually find time in their schedules to take care of the trees that will be planted, to ensure that they grow and create a greener and healthier environment.

Ondangwa mayor, Paavo Amwele, said trees offer more than just beautification to the environment, but also produce the oxygen that we breathe. Amwele then called on the residents of Ondangwa to plant trees and take care of them so that generations to come will enjoy a greener and more beautiful Ondangwa.
