Africa-Press – Namibia. ORANJEMUND will be the first town in the South to be completely covered by high speed fiber routes.

This is after it was revealed that Telecom Namibia partnered with OMDis to transform Oranjemund into a Smart City.

The main goal of a smart city is to optimise city functions and promote economic growth while also improving the quality of life for citizens by using smart technologies and data analysis.

Telecom Namibia announced earlier this year, that it aimed at modernising its telecommunications network and replacing outdated infrastructure and technologies.

Telecom stated that the rolling out of fiber routes in Orangemund is a strategic project under its operational plan, announced under its N$2.3 billion capex program to roll out digital infrastructure, funded from its own cash flows.

Part of Telecom Namibia’s Capex plan is to accelerate the roll out of fiber to pass and connect thousands of homes, thereby improving the coverage of its existing 10 676 km which makes 65.2% of the national coverage, national fiber backbone.

This project will add an additional 67.6 kms of fiber to its existing national fiber backbone.

“This investment will aid automation in various industries and boosts innovative products and service offerings,” read the presser.

The company aims to connect more homes and businesses, with packages that start at 8Mbps and up to 120Mbps.

“Given the emphasis on using digital innovation to build a safer, and more sustainable future for the betterment of the Namibian people, we are seeing greater focus on actualising smart communities,” added the presser.

Hence, Telecom Namibia has partnered with OMDis to transform Oranjemund into a smart city which is digitally forward, liveable, inclusive, sustainable, and thereby prosperous.

The two entities signed a joint partnership agreement cementing the relationship on the Friday in Oranjemund, which also served as the official launch of the Oranjemund Core Fibre Connectivity Project.

The agreement signals the serious intent of the two entities to invest in the expansion of digital technologies in Namibia, to enable the growth and development of digital services and digital communications.

This joint investment ensures that the community of Oranjemund has the necessary infrastructure in place to enable its digital transformation.

Phase 1 of the planned joint investment of around N$12 million, will commence in November, along the CBD area, and will take about eight months to complete.

The project will rollout 67.6 km of fibre and connect more than two thousand residential and businesses customers to the fiber-optic network.
