Africa-Press – Namibia. OSHAKATI Pharmacy in conjunction with Ohangwena Athletics Club officially launched the first track and field championship on Tuesday at Oshakati in the Oshana region.
The championship is set for 23 July at Oshakati Independence Stadium. A sponsorship of N$50 000 was availed by Oshakati Pharmacy for hosting the championship.
President of Ohangwena Athletics Club Sammy Mushelenga said the country cannot have international representation in athletics if they are not part of any athletics clubs in the country.
Mushelenga stated that such championship helps prepare youth in athletics to be able to present the country in the 2024 Olympics. “The aim is to develop the young Namibian child to be professional and international superstars in athletics,” he added.
Ester Shitaleni, who officially handed over the donation, said this is the first time the northern part of the country is hosting such an event, hence Oshakati Pharmacy Group being part of this prestigious event is an honour.
Shitaleni stated that this platform is aimed at empowering athletes in their journey to become world-class. “This is because sport has such a positive effect on those taking part and on the community at large, we could not pass up such an opportunity,” she said.
Shitaleni indicated that they intend to host the Oshakati Pharmacy Track and Field Championship annual which is open to all Namibian and international athletes.
“We will continue to pledge our support for our athletes through this event,” she added.
Shitaleni said with the right support, athletics have the potential to positively impact the lives of Namibian communities and even help to bring them out of poverty.
Shitaleni stated that the Oshakati Pharmacy Group view sports as a key development lever for economic growth. “With this maiden championship, we are stepping up to the challenge.” LAUNCHED: Oshakati Pharmacy officially launched its track and field championship on Tuesday.
