Africa-Press – Namibia. LAST minor renovations are underway at Oshana’s Oshakati Independence Stadium for the 19th edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup.

The much-anticipated tournament was supposed to be held in 2020 but due to the outbreak of coronavirus, the games were postponed.

The event will be held under the theme “Enhancing Pristine Sports Environment” and is set for 26 to 29 August, with Standard Bank as the main sponsor.

Oshana governor and chairperson of the local organizing committee Elia Irimari said the committee in collaboration with the town council is working tirelessly to improve the soccer pitch at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.

Irimari said the committee renovated the old netball court and built a new netball court with the assistance of Correctional Services that provided manpower.

“Minor renovations are still expected at the pavilions and the toilets at the stadium, as well as the school hostels where the learners will be accommodated,” he said.

He said the tournament not only brings sport to the region but also an opportunity for local traders to make an income.

He called on local business people to come on board and offer the much-needed financial support to complete the outstanding renovations that are needed.
