Africa-Press – Namibia. OSHIKOTO governor Penda Ya Ndakolo said that the lack of a proper roads network, particularly in rural areas, remains a challenge in the Region.
Ya Ndakolo made the remarks during his State of the Region Address (SORA) on Wednesday, saying the government is committed to addressing this challenge incrementally.
He said the importance of infrastructure development, specifically the construction and maintenance of roads network for economic development and community welfare, cannot be over-emphasized.
During the period under review, the Oniipa Town Council has maintained a 5 km gravel road for N$747 554.
“The Town Council also installed streetlights along the Onandjokwe main road funded by NORED for inhabitants of Oniipa to have easier access to their properties and to reduce robberies and accidents,” he said.
Ya Ndakolo stated that the Omuthiya Town Council is busy upgrading the 1.1 kilometre gravel road to bitumen standards in Omuthiya proper, and the council will spend N$5.8 million on this project.
The Tsumeb Municipality has so far spent N$1.5 million on the ongoing project to rehabilitate President Avenue’s bitumen road.
The project is expected to cost around N$2.9 million on completion.
