Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ongwediva Town Council has allocated a total of N$25.6 million for the provision of services infrastructure and public amenities in various areas and township extensions.
Ongwediva Mayor Taarah Shalyefu revealed this while presenting the provisional budget of N$172.3 million for the 2023/24 financial year.
Shalyefu mentioned that the council has consistently implemented a systematic plan to provide essential services infrastructure to existing townships, and the current financial plan upholds this commitment.
“There is a clear need for such services and amenities in several areas of Ongwediva, as expressed by community members during our public meetings and engagements,” he said.
He added that the availability and accessibility of clean water through a well-established water reticulation system, along with street lights, all-weather road infrastructure, and stormwater drainage systems where necessary, are essential for a fully developed township.
Therefore, Shalyefu said that the construction of stormwater channels in Extension 11 Phrase 2 will cost N$2.6 million, while the provision of water and sewer reticulation infrastructure in Extension 12 is budgeted at N$2 million.
The budget also includes N$7 million for the provision of bulk water storage and supply infrastructure in Omatando Extensions, and N$700,000 for the installation of high mast lights in the Onawa and Okandjengedi settlement areas.
Shalyefu mentioned that N$1.3 million has been allocated to continue the project of the electricity reticulation network in Sky Phrase.
Additionally, N$3 million has been earmarked for the installation of streetlights along the main road (C46) from Nekulilo Omagano Memorial School to the Ongwediva police checkpoint, and N$500,000 for the continuation of the project to install streetlights along Ongwe Street.
The development of a park in Extension 11 is budgeted at N$2.5 million, and the development of a multi-purpose sports field in Phrase 4 is allocated N$6 million.
“The importance of rehabilitating, upgrading, and repairing existing infrastructure to extend its economic lifespan cannot be overstated,” Shalyefu emphasized.
Therefore, the budget for the 2023/24 financial year includes N$3.5 million for the continuation of the rehabilitation of the road between Oshana Regional Shopping Mall and David Shikomba Business Complex.
Furthermore, Shalyefu mentioned that a new pump station will be constructed in the Reception Area Phase 2 at a cost of N$500,000.
