Panga-wielding girlfriend attacker escapes from custody

Africa-Press – Namibia. A MAN arrested on Christmas Day for threatening to kill his girlfriend with a panga escaped from the Usakos Police minutes before lock-up after his rights were explained to him at the charge office.

The suspect, 34-year-old Steven Awarab, ran from the office around 20:00 on Saturday with police officers chasing after him.

Awarab disappeared into the night and most probably fled to the areas of Tubusis or Okombahe.

According to Sergeant Anastasia Frans, Community Affairs Officer of the Erongo police, Awarab on Saturday around 15:00 reportedly attempted to cut his 33-year-old girlfriend with a panga and threatened to kill her at their residence, house number 17 in the Hakhaseb location.

He was subsequently arrested for assault by threatening, read with the provision of the Domestic Violence Act, but then escaped from custody.

Anyone who has information or knows his whereabouts is urgently requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu on 081 246 4757, Sergeant Ndaarulilwa Julius on 081 799 2383 or the nearest police station.
