Africa-Press – Namibia. A 28-year-old woman has been admitted to the Welwitschia Private Hospital under police guard after she fled the scene of a hit and run incident in the streets of Walvis Bay on Saturday afternoon.
According to the incident report provided by the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, the woman was driving a silver Volkswagen Golf down Moses Garoeb Street at about 13:45 when she struck a 62-year-old man who was busy crossing the street.
It was later discovered that the woman did not have a valid driver’s license. The victim was rushed to the Walvis Bay State Hospital in a critical condition.
The report states that the elderly man unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to the hospital. “The suspect did not stop at the accident scene to ascertain the damage or render help to the victim,” the report says.
According to the report, the silver golf was found stuck in the thick sand between the Dunes Mall and the Narraville residential area of the harbour town and it is suspected that the woman attempted to take a shortcut home. She was traced to her home and taken into custody before being admitted to the hospital for what the report describes as treatment.
The report states that the woman is set to make her first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on charges of culpable homicide, failure to ascertain the nature of injuries or damage after an accident, and driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license on Monday.
The name of the elderly victim has not been made public because some of his immediate family members still have to be officially notified about his untimely passing.
