Africa-Press – Namibia. PRIME minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, education minister Anna Nghipondoka and Khomas governor Laura Mcleod-Katjirua have been elected onto the Swapo central committee.

They and several other party leaders made it to the new central committee list following a recount and verification of the central committee results on Friday.

The new list was released on Saturday morning.

Those who did not make it to the list released on Monday but made it to the new list are: Evelyn Nawases-Taeyele, Namibian ambassador to the United States of America Margaret Mensah-Williams, mines deputy minister Kornelia Shilunga and deputy minister of international relations and cooperation, Jenelly Matundu.

Businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun, deputy minister of trade Verna Sinimbo, deputy minister of defence Hilma Nicanor and Otjozondjupa governor Festus Ueitele are now members of the central committee.

Swapo congress presiding officer Joshua Kaumbi confirmed that the initial list was not verified and the party top leadership took a decision to recount and verify the results.

On Friday, three central committee members-elect Tommy Nambahu, Erginus Endjala and Paulus Kapia, through their lawyer, Kadhila Amoomo, demanded that Kaumbi stop the decision to recount, verify and certify central committee election results.

Endjala, Kapia and Nambahu claim the decision taken by the Swapo leaders is unlawful, asserting that only the party’s congress, central committee or politburo are empowered to hear an election petition.

However, Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa wrote to Amoomo to say the recounting, verication and certification of results would not be halted.
