Protesters pressure Chinese shops in Oshakati

Africa-Press – Namibia. CHINESE shops at Oshakati failed to open at 08:00 today in anticipation of a protest march organized by the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF).

The NEFF is demanding that Chinese shops countrywide be closed until jailed activists Michael Amushelelo and Dee Nauyoma are granted bail.

Chinese shop employees informed Informanté that they were told to report for duty at 10:00.

The protesters were scheduled to start assembling at Okamugongo kAangandjela at 07:00 before making their way to the Etango Complex on the Okatana Road.

By 10:00, shops were still closed and protesters were still at their assembly point.

There is a heavy police presence both at Etango and at the venue where protesters are assembling.

“Away with the Chinese”. “Down Sebastian Ndeitunga”. “Down NamRA”.

These are some of the slogans by NEFF protesters at Oshakati this morning. Although the protest was supposed to be inclusive and participants were requested beforehand to avoid political colours, the NEFF colours were predominant. The Chinese shops are opening gradually under the watchful eyes of police officers.
