Africa-Press – Namibia. The Rehoboth Town Council (RTC), in collaboration with the GIZ team, has announced that an open market is being planned at the town.
This was announced during a recent community meeting held regarding the development of the proposed open market at the Oanob Community Hall at Block E.
Councillor Jacky Khariseb says the informal marketplace will be a one-stop hub and will integrate several community-focused features, including a playground for children, a nearby police station to enhance safety, dedicated spaces for local cuisine, and an environmentally friendly park.
“The establishment is a significant step towards boosting local economic development and fostering community cohesion. We aim to developed our town,” Khariseb adds.
Khariseb says the initiative will inject economic vitality into Block E and create a safe inclusive space where residents can trade goods and services while showcasing the diverse skills and talents within their community.
“We have a lot of enthusiasm for the project and believe in its potential impact. This development represents more than just infrastructure. It is about empowering our citizens and building stronger, more connected neighbourhoods,” Khariseb says, adding that the project has been in planning and budgeting phases for the past three years now.
“Let us take ownership of the project and never forget the importance of safeguarding public resources. Once funding is available, another meeting will be held. The RTC is commitment towards shaping a vibrant, self-sustaining community in Block E,” Khariseb said.
GIZ staff member Nere Guarrotxena says community involvement is important for this project.
“We are doing this for the community. The community’s input is essential for the success of this upcoming project. The community members’ feedback helps us refine the plan and ensures the project truly serves its purpose,” Guarrotxena says.
Resident Benjamin Smith says the opening of the market will help better the town and its people. He says the market will provide livelihood and income opportunities for individuals.
“These marketplaces play a crucial role in many developing countries. These markets also provide access to a wide variety of goods, services and products, often at lower prices to the public,” Smith says.
Another resident, Anna Beukes, is pleased about the job creation opportunities.
“Many people living at Rehoboth can’t find employment. Informal marketplaces offer a primary source of income and employment for individuals. I am glad to hear that our people will have a legal platform to set up their own businesses and put food on the tables at home,” she says.
Beukes says this platform will help develop and grow entrepreneurship at the town.
