Africa-Press – Namibia. the months of March and April, the Rehoboth Town Council plans to evict all inhabitants who occupy town lands illegally. This decision was made in a council meeting held last Thursday. The affected people will be given a 30-day notice to vacate the area.
“We have a database of who are there legally and we have a database of the applicants who are yet to be given contracts, that’s the waiting list. So, if you’re not on the waiting list or on the database of those who have contracts, then you’re a squatter and we will tell you to vacate,” said the council’s chief executive officer, Simeon Kanime, last week.
“This is for the betterment of our town. These squatters are grazing on lands that tenants are paying for. It’s unfair to tenants that are paying,” he stated.
“Only if you have been permitted by the council will you be allowed to stay there on condition that you pay your monthly rent, because it makes no sense for you to get a contract from council but you don’t honour it in terms of payment,” he stated. He further urged tenants to abide by the terms of their contracts.
