Remain calm, says health ministry

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Health and Social Services is on high alert, closely monitoring the new Covid-19 variant named Omicron, but at the same time urged people to remain calm and practice all Covid-19 preventative measures.

So far, more than 40 countries have suspended flights from Namibia and other Southern African countries as a result of the new variant. According to a statement released by the Executive Director of Health, Ben Nangombe, Namibia has not reported any case of Omicron which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared a variant of concern.

The Ministry in its report on the Covid-19 situation in Namibia confirmed that a nine-year-old girl with underlying health issues has died of Covid-19 in the Grootfontein district.

Health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula also announced there were nine new confirmed cases, seven males and two females, from 818 test results in the 24-hour reporting cycle Friday to Saturday, which represents a 1.1% positivity ratio. The ages range between 2 years and 36 years.

The number of active cases is 103 of which 16 are hospitalised, with two of those in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). None of the hospitalised are vaccinated.

Shangula confirmed that of the confirmed cases, one is a healthcare worker. One of the positive cases has received one dose of a vaccine. “We have recorded seven new recoveries. Erongo and Omusati regions recorded three each and Khomas one,” Shangula said. According to Nangombe, a lot remains unknown about the new variant which is said to have multiple mutations.
