THEY came by foot, they came by car and others by donkey cart and horse for the biggest school sports event since Covid-19 limited social gatherings.

Parents and children under the sparse shade of the Mopani trees of the Otjokavare area cheered on nine soccer and seven netball teams for highest honours in the Harvey Boulter Annual School Tournament.

The Kephas Mezume Combined school is a fully equipped modernized tech school built by philanthropist Boulter, won the netball competition.

Nillo Taapopi SS, Braunfells High, Kamanhab Combined, Hungua Combined, Alpha Combined, Hiaukambe Combined and IK Tjimuhiva Combined turned up to showcase their best in Soccer and Netball.

For the past three to four years the Kephas Mezuma school management reached out to the other schools in an effort to identify talent that rarely gets exposure, but Covid, drought, and lack of basic needs blocked the organizers.

The Boulter Foundation saw the opportunity with the lifting of restrictions and the hype amongst communities to emulate the national athletic heroes, Mboma and Massilingi, to pull over 100 disadvantaged children together in the spirit of sport and fair play at Otjokavare just north of Werda Gate.

Kephas Muzumba school for 400 learners is equipped with computers and boasts optic fibre where the teacher concentrates on ICT, the sciences and mathematics.

The academic rural groundbreakers Kephas Muzuma won the Netball competition and will defend the crown, because of the enormous community interest and unity and pride demonstration from parents and learners from various language groups.

The Harvey Boulter Tournament will be an annual event with plans already at an advanced stage to increase the participating schools towards the premier sports event of the harsh Northwest of Namibia.
