Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Roads Authority on Saturday warned motorists to exercise extreme caution with locusts on road surfaces in the Hardap and //Kharas regions.
Roads Authority spokesperson Hileni Filimon said the migratory insect species moves in swarms over the road surface, posing a security hazard to motorists.
Filimon said locust swarms crawling on the roads often catch motorists unaware, leaving them no choice but to drive over them, killing them in the process.
“This leaves fatty residue on the road surface, which causes the road to become slippery and a danger to other motorists,” said Filimon.
Last weekend, two accidents occurred 30km outside Keetmanshoop. Police said slippery remains of the locusts on road surfaces were suspected to have caused the accidents.
Four people were injured in the first accident and none in the second one. The two accidents took place 30minutes apart on the Tses-Keetmanshoop road.
On Friday, another accident was reported in which three people died on the spot.
Filimon said the Roads Authority is appealing to members of the public travelling to and from //Kharas region to observe road signs, reduce speed and exercise extreme caution, should they observe locusts on the road.
The Roads Authority further requests motorists to report any sightings of locusts on the roads at [email protected], nearest RA Maintenance Office or RA Facebook page.
