Africa-Press – Namibia. The police in the Kavango East region are investigating a case of robbery after the Rundu residence of the Rundu Cash & Carry supermarket owner was robbed on Wednesday night.
The Kavango East acting regional commander and crime investigations coordinator, deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, confirmed the robbery, adding that unknown suspects stormed into the house and robbed the occupants.
He said the suspects fled with valuables, including a vehicle, mobile phones and laptops.
“So far, we can’t comment much on the robbery, because an investigation is underway. What we can confirm is that some people attacked their residence. We have to go back to the scene to determine what exactly was robbed,” said Kanyetu.
The robbery happened after over 100 workers at the shop demonstrated against the management of the shop over unfair labour practices, low wages and poor working environment.
The Namibian understands the suspects also got away with a safe of money.
The stolen vehicle was found in the bushes around Rundu’s industrial area.
Meanwhile, Rundu Cash & Carry supermarket closed on Thursday until further notice to allow for the investigation into the robbery at the owner’s residence.
Kanyetu said the shop would be allowed to operate once the investigations are finalised, and after the labour dispute has been resolved.
