Africa-Press – Namibia. THE deputy minister of mines and energy Cornelia Shilunga commissioned the electrification of Marulaboom, Rooidaghek, Mkata and Mangetti Dune rural areas in Tsumkwe on Wednesday.
The areas were electrified and linked to the national electricity grid at a cost of N$40 million under the ministry’s rural electrification project in conjunction with Cenored.
Shilunga said the project was undertaken to accelerate development in the areas, and link them to the national electricity grid.
“Electricity is a basic human need. It is essential for the economic growth of communities, particularly at a time when the nation wants to industrialise. It also remains a social growth driver for the communities,” said Shilunga.
Speaking at the same occasion, Otjozondjupa governor James Uerikua called on the mines and energy ministry to also expand the power line to Tsumkwe and Gam settlements.
Uerikua said Tsumkwe and Gam are currently using a mini-grid system, which does not have sufficient capacity to cater to the demands of the two settlements.
He said electricity is an enabler and attracts investors, and eventually development.
The governor thanked Cenored for ensuring that the Otjozondjupa region is electrified.
“The inhabitants are feeling the presence of Cenored not only in Tsumkwe but also in other constituencies such as Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Grootfontein,” said Uerikua.
