Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Police Chief in the Oshana Region, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, has been re-appointed as Gold Commander for the Etosha National Park Anti-Poaching Safety and Security squad.
Sakaria takes over from Oshikoto Regional Commander, Theopoline Kalompo-Nashikaku, who has been in charge for the past six months.
Sakaria was re-appointed this month and will, for the next six months, be responsible for directing the joint Nampol/NDF operations in the Etosha National Park.
He said that he will concurrently oversee the Oshana Region and the anti-poaching operations in Etosha.
“I will be heading to Etosha to give orientation to the personnel who will be stationed there and to properly brief them on the operation,” he said.
He added that they will not allow police officers to be harassed or intimidated by poachers while on duty, warning that such actions would have severe consequences for the poachers. Therefore, any poacher who illegally enters Etosha and is confronted by police officers should surrender immediately, or they will be dealt with accordingly.
He stressed that the wildlife in the park is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, as it attracts a large number of tourists, and they will show no mercy to those attempting to harm the animals.
