Africa-Press – Namibia. ENVIRONMENT minister Pohamba Shifeta, government spokesperson Peya Mushelenga and deputy works minister Veikko Nekundi are among the new members of the ruling party secretariat elected in Windhoek on Saturday.

The Swapo central committee (CC) elected new members to serve for the next five years.

Shifeta is now the ruling party’s head of legal affairs secretary, succeeding immigration minister Albert Kawana, while Nekundi is the defence secretary.

Mushelenga, who was in Shifeta’s camp at the last congress, was elected as secretary for external affairs.

Deputy minister of defence and veterans affairs Hilma Nicanor retained her position as party spokesperson.

Trade minister Lucia Iipumbu was elected secretary of finance, while gender equality deputy minister Bernadette Jagger is the new secretary of economic affairs.

Swapo backbencher Modestus Amutse has been elected as secretary of labour, while Lucia Witbooi is secretary of education, culture and sport.

Deputy mines minister Kornelia Shilunga will be in charge of the health and social services secretariat.

Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni is the new secretary of transport.

Khomas governor Laura McLaeod-Katjirua took the agriculture portfolio.

Deputy trade minister Verna Sinimbo is secretary of housing, sanitation and rural development.

Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s deputy at international relations, Jenelly Matundu, will oversee the portfolio of environmental affairs.
